The first words out of your mouth should be....

From the local hardware store, to the premium department stores of the world, the first impression a customer gets of a store is the front door. How clean or not so clean it is. Do the print ads pop in the windows. Or is the neon sign blinking. In this blog  I am putting that aside because for many retail employees they do not have control of the merchandising, advertising or promotions. They can  and you heard this spiel way too many times " control the things they can control"  What can you control is you. What you say, how you say it, your appearance, your demeanor and your attitude.  The next line of posts will be a short and sweet path to a better sale. It is many parts so I'm breaking it down

A greeting to a store should have in my humble opinion.

  • Eye Contact
  • A smile
  • Observation of the customer's appearance
  • Good posture
  • A verbal acknowledgement that includes the following
  1. The time of day, Good morning, afternoon or evening
  2. an welcome to " name of the store,"
  3. Your name
  4. A general question that has nothing to do with business
Good morning welcome to Olivia's Boutique. My Name is Sean. Is it still beautiful outside?

The first three bulleted items make the customer feel welcome, gives good body language, shows interest. We assume that they are here for some level of business be it investigation or purchase. By asking a general question we are opening a dialog that will lead to questions that will allow us to understand the customers needs.

Next post discovering the needs.
